It’s July 5. I’m driving to work and remember that three years ago, on this same day, I was also on my way to work—still adjusting to the routine of hospital life after finishing my first year at my workplace.
The roads were quiet after the holiday, and as I approached an intersection with the light about to turn red, I sped up a little—just an extra 10 miles. I thought, “It’s just me on the road anyway.”

A minute later, an officer’s lights were blinking behind me. I already knew it was me, so I pulled into a closed coffee shop parking lot.
He asked if I knew why he stopped me. I said yes, I was speeding. Then he added, “Not just that, you don’t have your seatbelt on either.” That one surprised me—I didn’t even realize I forgot.
He was kind and noticed I was on my way to the hospital for work. He reminded me to be careful, especially after holidays. He gave me a warning for speeding but a ticket for the seatbelt violation, which was fair.

After celebrating Independence Day, July 5 became my personal yearly reminder that freedom is great… but so are speed limits and seatbelts.
Since then, I’ve always tried to be more mindful of my driving. I also learned that an officer can appear when you least expect it. 🤔 Funny how one mistake can become a reminder you never forget.
